Frequently asked questions

Here are answers to some of the questions I'm most often asked about music lessons. If you can't find what you're looking for, please get in touch—I'll be happy to help.

Do I need any previous musical experience?

Not at all! Lessons are suitable for complete beginners through to advanced musicians. Every lesson is tailored to your current ability, helping you progress at a pace that suits you.

From what age can my child start music lessons?

The ideal starting age depends on the instrument and the individual child. If you're unsure whether your child is ready, I'm happy to discuss their age, development and interests to help you decide.

 Do you teach adults?

Yes! I teach students of all ages, from young beginners to adults who are learning for the first time or returning to music after many years.

Do I need to own an instrument before starting?

You'll need access to an instrument for practising between lessons. If you haven't purchased one yet, I can offer advice on choosing an instrument that's suitable for your needs and budget.

Are music exams compulsory?

No. While I prepare many students for ABRSM, Trinity, London College and MTB examinations, exams are completely optional. Some students enjoy working towards qualifications, while others simply learn for fun.

How much practice should I do?

Regular, focused practice is far more effective than occasional long sessions. I'll give you clear practice goals after each lesson to help you make steady progress.

How long are the lessons?

Lessons are available in different lengths depending on the student's age, ability and goals. We'll choose the lesson length that's most appropriate for you.

How do I book my first lesson?

Simply get in touch using the contact form on my website, by email or by phone. I'll be happy to answer any questions and arrange your first lesson.
